GEN3040 - Genomics and Molecular Genetics

General Unit Information

Genomics and Molecular genetics poster

Information from genome sequencing projects is impacting strongly on many aspects of biology. For example, evolutionary studies, developmental genetics, theraputic drug design, medical genetics, industrial and agricultural biotechnology.

By studying Genomics and Molecular Genetics, GEN3040, students consider structural components of genomes ranging from unicellular organisms such as yeast, to multicellular organisms such as humans. Mechanisms controlling gene expression in response to developmental cues or environmental stimuli are considered. Examples from recent and current scientific literature are used to illustrate concepts. Students also gain practical experience in analysing gene structure, expression and genome analysis and in presenting experimental results in a scholarly and scientific format.

Objectives

When GEN3040 has been completed, students will have an understanding of the structure and composition of the genomes of a range of organisms, including complex multicellular organisms such as insects, higher plants and humans.  An appreciation of the mechanisms by which genes are regulated by environmental and/or developmental cues will also have been gained.  Information will also be presented relating to the use of genomics to undertake beneficial research to solve problems of importance in industry, agriculture and human health and the impact of this rapidly advancing and exciting subject area upon societal norms and values.
