BIO1022 - Biology IIGeneral Unit Information![]() This unit focuses on core aspects of biology and examines them in more detail. It provides a more in depth study of biological processes than was possible in BIO1011. The unit does not cover the breadth of BIO1011, but by focussing on particular areas it complements and extends the skills and knowledge gained in that subject. Whilst BIO1022 can be taken on its own it is strongly recommended that it is taken in conjunction and after BIO1011, particularly for students without VCE biology. ![]() Study of the biology of microbes and animals is emphasised in this subject. Ecological factors that are biologically important at the level of whole organisms and at cellular, subcellular, and biochemical levels are considered for each organ system under study. The practical section continues what has been introduced in BIO1011, stressing an experimental approach to the study of biological organisation. This provides a very good basis for further study in biological and biomedical disciplines. BIO1022 reinforces skills in library research, critical approaches to scientific methods, use of basic laboratory equipment, and data evaluation and presentation. The practical section of the subject introduces and stresses the experimental approach used when studying problems at various levels of biological organisation. Practicals are taught in a modern, well-equipped laboratory complex that incorporates multimedia computing resources. As in BIO1011 the flexible learning structure of the unit, with considerable staff and multimedia support and extensive self learning opportunities, allows students to monitor and improve their performance.
