Sexual Selection

Reproductive decisions by both males and females lie at the heart of sexual selection and much of my research is devoted to understanding its two key components, mate choice and intra-sexual competition. How, for example, do females choose their mates? Are males choosy too? What are the costs and benefits of being picky? And how does competition for mates affect the ability of individuals to gain access to preferred suitors? I address these questions using manipulative experiments in the field, as well as mate choice experiments in the laboratory. In regard to the latter, I have, at various times, used both live and computer-generated images of ‘virtual fish’ to investigate the mate preferences of my test subjects.
