Dr Patrick Baker
Stream and lake ecology

I work on a diverse range of questions from stream and lake ecosystems, concentrating in particular on the effects of human activities (particularly landuse change) on aquatic ecosystems. I am particularly interested in the ways in which human activities such as pollution affect the ways in which energy and materials flow through food webs.

Research themes:

Effects of urbanisation on stream ecosystems

The development of towns and cities has had massive effects on the ways in which streams and rivers function, through alteration in patterns of run-off and reduction in water quality. These factors influence the biota which is found in these systems. My current research addresses the flows of energy in urban stream food webs and touches on the way in which human attitudes towards the environment affect how we manage these systems

Influences of agricultural development on streams and the potential for restoration and remediation

Reconciling production with biodiversity in agricultural and forestry settings represents a significant challenge. Working from patch to landscape scales our group are interested in understanding the consequences of landuse change for biodiversity and ecosystem function, the potential for restoration and the adoption of best practise to minimise impacts.
