Jock Marshall Reserve
Facility for Aquatic Science, Teaching and Research (FASTR)
School of Biological Sciences is currently investing in creating a world-leading aquatic research facility in the Jock Marshall Scientific Reserve at the Clayton campus. Together with an extensive program of replanting of native vegetation and restoring natural waterways within the Reserve, the School is constructing the Facility for Aquatic Science, Teaching and Research (FASTR), a network of tanks, pools and flumes. Central to these developments is a wireless network of sensors and cameras that will allow remote collection of data and web-based access. The interface between this data and users will be a 3D visualization of the facility, allowing researchers to move through the Reserve and then link to real time data being uploaded from the field sensors. An exciting extension of this concept will see high school students visiting the facility to set up experiments, then monitoring them from their classroom. The School of Biological Sciences expects the facility to be completed and go on-line in late 2007.
