Project Outline
The south-eastern eucalypt forests of Tasmania are an important timber resource. Forest management practices have been
identified as having the potential to cause habitat fragmentation for the saproxylic (dead wood) community. Working closely
with ‘Forestry Tasmania’ I aim to estimate dispersal ability and levels of gene flow for some species of log dwelling
beetles to help assess possible impacts of forestry. This work is closely tied in to research being undertaken by other
members of the ‘Molecular Population Biology Research Group’

The Species
Prostomis atkinsoni: Family Prostomidae.
Prostomis is a genus of beetle virtually extinct in Europe.
It’s rare status is speculated to be a product of habitat fragmentation.
