Meaghan, co-supervised by staff at DPI Attwood where she is based, is working on the population genetic structure of Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii), an iconic native freshwater fish endemic to the Murray-Darling basin. The main goal is to determine if there is any variation between fish populations across the Murray-Darling Basin and if so, to identify management units to target for conservation. The impact of stocking practices, if any, will be assessed by comparing pre-stocking samples (around 50 years old) with post stocking samples. Upon completion of the project, a process for re-stocking will be outlined, which will strive to maximise the genetic diversity of fish released into the wild, and to avoid stocking the genetic 'types' that may not belong in certain populations.
