Project Outline
This work continues a system initiated in 2003, which was the Honours research of
Simon
Watson.
Background
The south-eastern eucalypt forests of Tasmania are an important timber resource. Forest management practices have been
identified as having the potential to cause habitat fragmentation for the saproxylic (dead wood) community. Working closely
with ‘Forestry Tasmania’ we estimate dispersal ability and levels of gene flow for some species of log dwelling beetles
to help assess possible impacts of forestry.
Sarah researched a beetle of dead wood - Coripera deplanata. Unlike Prostomis atkinsoni on which
Simon Watson worked, C. deplanata inhabits surface wood and is a much larger species.
