Thesis accepted Feb 1999, since when Deryn has been a post-doctoral
researcher with Terry Robinson at the University of Stellenbosch, and later at Murdoch University, Western Australia.
The Southern Hairy-nosed wombat has reduced and fragmented range, but it still spans large geographic distances.
Prior to Deryn’s work, the degree of difference of the animals over the range was unknown. Application of molecular techniques
(primarily microsatellites and mtDNA) revealed genetic units that can be considered for separate management.
