Project Title

Genetic variation in populations of Leadbeater's possum

Abstract

Leadbeater’s possum is an endangered, arboreal marsupial endemic to Victoria. Since its re-discovery in 1961 in Victoria’s Central Highlands, populations have been discovered at a number of different locations within the highlands. A small isolated population also exists at Yellingbo, on the fringe of, but separate from other highlands populations. The extent of genetic exchange between these populations is unknown, and the degree of population differentiation, indicative of either long term or recent evolutionary events, has not been documented. This research project is investigating the level of genetic variation within and between these populations using both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analyses. Genic and genotypic patterns in populations will be analysed for population genetic bottlenecking, fragmentation, genetic exchange (indicative of migration), patterns in the mating system, phylogeography and coalescent times. This information will be used to make inferences about the population status and its implications for management.
