A range of plant-made vaccine projects are available including vaccines/therapeutics against: avian influenza, Newcastle disease virus, tuberculosis, traveller's diarrhoea. Projects can be designed dependent on the interest of the student. Areas of experimentation include: plant tissue culture, plant transformation, plant molecular biology, immunology, animal trials. Examples of projects include:

  • Increase production of folic acid in plants towards food fortification. Involves plant molecular biology, plant transformation and tissue culture, molecular characterisation.
  • Effect of subcellular localisation of a tuberculosis vaccine candidate in plant cells. Involves plant molecular biology, plant transformation and tissue culture.
  • Comparison of plant expression systems. Investigate ability of different species and plant systems to express candidate protein. Involves plant tissue culture, transformation and molecular analysis.
  • Plant cells for delivery of vaccines. Aims to investigate where plant cells release antigens in the gut. Involves plant tissue culture, and possibly animal trials.
