Field Station

The School of Biological Sciences operates a small field station near Alvie, north of Colac, which may be booked by staff and students for use when undertaking fieldwork in the region. Subject to availability, it may also be booked by staff and students from other Monash Schools or Faculties, or from other Universities. Bookings are essential (see booking form).

The Colac Otway Shire covers a diverse area, from volcanic lakes, craters and plains in the north, through the hinterland forests of the Otway Ranges to the Great Ocean Road coastline. The station is located near the township of Alvie in the north-western part of the shire, close to the shores of Lakes Colac and Corangamite and the Red Rock Recreation Park. Red Rock itself is a scoria cone, a steep mound made by lava fountaining from a volcanic vent, and Red Rock lookout offers 360 degree views of the lava plains and lakes all round.

The station is equipped with beds for up to four people, cooking facilities, and some basic laboratory equipment such as stereo microscopes. Users must provide their own food, bedding and other supplies (see conditions of use).

For further information about the field station, contact the Resources Manager on (03) 9905-5610.
